WWF ALERT: stop oil disasters in the Baltic Sea

In this Passport alert:

New campaign: Stop oil disasters in the Baltic Sea
New campaign: Oppose law authorizing seagull hunting in Italy
Campaign success: Hungary opposes Novo Virje dam!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stop oil disasters in the Baltic Sea

The Baltic is one of the smallest seas in the world with some of the busiest maritime traffic. Oil spills are a real and present threat to this fragile marine environment.

With oil transportation dramatically increasing in the Baltic's treacherous shipping routes, the risk of a devastating oil spill is imminent.

You can help safeguard the Baltic by urging countries attending next month's International Maritime Organization meeting to give this special sea, and the wildlife it supports, the protection it desperately deserves.

Take action NOW: www.passport.panda.org/campaigns/campaign.cfm?&uCampaignId=462

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oppose law authorizing seagull hunting in Italy

While some species of seagull are now endangered in parts of Europe, Italy is proposing a drastic law to reduce seagull numbers.

The proposed law will authorize the hunting of seagulls and cormorants, and take away the protection status for some endangered species!

Help stop the seagull slaughter: www.passport.panda.org/campaigns/campaign.cfm?&uCampaignId=461

Hungary opposes Novo Virje dam!

Hungary has announced its opposition to Croatia's plan to build a hydropower dam on the Drava River!

The Hungarian Environment and Water Ministry stated that, if necessary, transboundary conventions and international law will be used to prevent the project from going ahead.

The planned Novo Virje dam would be the largest hydropower plant on the Drava, whose lower stretches are some of the last remaining free-flowing river sections in Europe.

Many thanks for your support! Close to 6,000 e-mails were sent by Passport holders to Hungary's Minister of Environment and Water asking him to oppose this disastrous construction.

While Hungary's statement of opposition still needs a governmental decree to make it binding, this is the first success for conservationists since this old communist plan was revived three years ago.

Thank you for taking action

international science networks, collaborating with major universities
throughout the world. The Faculty of Science consists of four
departments, with 1,500 employees including researchers, lecturers,
150 full- and part-time professors operating in eleven research
institutes. Each institute has its own research programme that is
financed by the faculty, the national research council NWO, the
government, EU and private enterprises.

The Section Computational Science at the Computer Science Department
of the University of Amsterdam invites applications for a Ph.D.
position in the field of
SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING

Ph.D position

Full-time
Vacancy number PZ FNWI A-037

Job profile
Project: ``Simulation of developmental regulatory networks''

The project is financed by the Netherlands Organisation for
Scientific Research, NWO, research program Computational Life
Sciences and consists
of 2 Ph.D. positions, one (position 1) at the Section Computational
Science of the Universiteit van Amsterdam
(http://www.science.uva.nl/research/scs/)
and one (position 2) at the Center for Mathematics and Computer
Science (CWI) in Amsterdam (http://www.cwi.nl/~gollum/RegNet).

In this project we will develop a model for simulating regulatory
networks that is capable of quantitatively reproducing spatial and
temporal
expression patterns in developmental processes. The model will be
coupled
with a biomechanical model of cell aggregates and used to study the
formation of spatial and temporal expression patterns of gene products
during development in cellular systems. A major issue are correct
estimations of the parameter settings in the network model. Therefore
the
model will be used in combination with optimization algorithms
(simulated
annealing) to explore large parameter spaces of regulatory networks
and to
infer parameters from actual spatial and temporal gene expression
patterns. As a case study we are planning to use the body plan
formation
in relatively simple multi-cellular organisms (sponges and
scleractinian corals).
Here we will closely collaborate with Prof W.E.G. Müller
(Institut für Physiologische Chemie Johannes Gutenberg-Universität
Mainz, Germany) and Prof D.J. Miller (Biochemistry and Molecular
Biology, James Cook University, Australia). The PhD student
Scientific Computing within the Section Computational Science will in
particular work on optimization methods and
modelling cellular aggregates, while the PhD student at the Center
for Mathematics and Computer Science will focus on the numerical
methods for modelling the regulatory networks.

Aspiluki Minta Perusahaan Besar Jangan Lakukan Pembajakan

Jakarta, (Analisa)

Asosiasi Peranti Lunak Telematika Indonesia (Aspiluki) meminta
perusahaan besar jangan melakukan pembajakan sofware sehingga Indonesia

Menurut dia, perusahaan-perusahaan besar banyak melakukan pembajakan
sofware, sehingga image Indonesia di mata dunia kurang baik. Indonesia
dunia, sehingga merugikan usaha mereka, katanya.

pemerintah sendiri bagaimana kebijakannya.

Kalau Aspiluki berusaha memperbaiki kondisi tersebut, namun pemerintah
sendiri belum melakukan kebijakan UU Hak Kekayaan Intelektual maka ini
sulit dapat diperbaiki, tuturnya.

Menurut dia, pencurian piranti lunak di Asia Pasifik sebesar 4 milyar
dolar AS dari seluruh perkiraan yaitu 11,7 milyar dolar AS.

AS.

(Ant)
